If the device line says, "Generic Software" then the game isn't actually using your sound card at all." Open that up in a text editor and look near the top for a couple lines that say:Ĭheck to see if both of those have the name of your sound card. " Go to your (system drive):\Users\your system name\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect folder and look in the Logs folder for a file called MassEffect.log
To see if your PC takes advantage of your built-in sound from your motherboard or sound card, follow SlimX's instruction: Thanks to redditor SlimX, it fixed the issue. The following paragraph is COMPLETELY optional:
Simply go inside the document, locate the section by pressing CTRL+F and search for, find the DeviceName= Generic Software, and delete the Generic Software part, and save the document.
SlimX mentioned in his reddit thread, that if you go and adjust your sound settings in-game after changing the DeviceName= Generic Software to *BLANK*, the value might return to it's original state before modification. The document also includes the dialogue cut out fix. Thanks to TheHunter from the guru3D forums, I was able to spice up the values in the original document with his suggestions, so the game theoratically should take more advantage of your PC. Your game should now run with minimal dialogue cut outs and less to no stuttering. Place the modified BIOEngine.ini document inside the Mass Effect Config folder, where your backup of the original document is also located. You might get a warning that this kind of document could cause harm to your computer, but that should not be the case, since it is just the regular document from the installation, with some tweaks, so you don't have to manually change the values.
Download this modified BIOEngine.ini document: Create a backup of the document, in case something goes wrong (better safe than sorry) and call it either or BIOEngine.ini BACKUP, whatever you please.ģ. (Or simply search for BIOEngine.ini in Windows Explorer)Ģ. Located in: This PC > C: > Users > User name > Documents > BioWare > Mass Effect > Config
The reason for the dialogue cut outs, is due to the game is coded to use "Generic Software", thus, not taking advantage of your built-in sound card of your motherboard, or your seperate sound card. The coding was set to fulfill these older specifications, and not the status quo of PC gaming today.īy tweaking a few things in the BIOEngine.ini file, you should theoratically be able to use more of your PC's power, so the game has more resources to work with, and thus run more stable. Since Mass Effect is a couple of years old by now, the specifaction of older hardware were severely lower in comparision to modern PC architecture. The reason for the stuttering is supposedly due to a limitation in the coding of the BIOEngine.ini file.
Researching the web for an answer to these problems, I have found a minor solution, that reduces the amount of stuttering and dialogue cut outs. These issues involved frame stuttering, and dialogue cut outs mid-sentence, or during the last part of a respective character's monologue. :)įor quite some time, I had issues regarding Mass Effect. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HARMFUL IN ANY WAY, BUT JUST SO WE ARE CLEAR.įeel free to contribute and discuss, so we can fix these issues. I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSABLE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG.
